There have been a number of serious flooding incidents when flows in the stream which flows through the small village of Boverton in South Wales have exceeded the capacity of the culvert with runs under the roads at the village square. The most recent flooding incident in 2000 resulted in many houses and shops being flooded up to one metre in depth.
Richard Allitt Associates were commissioned to investigate the causes of the flooding and to assess whether any low cost solutions could be implemented to improve the situation.

It was found that not only was the culvert inadequate but a sharp bend mid-way along the culvert created significant head losses which contributed to the flooding. It was found that the downstream channel had sufficient capacity and the construction of two additional 1200mm dia pipelines alongside the existing culvert provided sufficient additional capacity to deal with 1 in 100 year flows.
